Obedience

In Devotional, News by Howard Fox

“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” – Luke 6:46-49.

In the above scriptures the person is claiming that Jesus is their Lord. One definition of Lord is “someone having power, authority, or influence; a master or ruler.” Master – “a man who has people working for him, especially servants or slaves.” Ruler – “a person exercising government or dominion”. If Jesus truly is my Lord, I will follow what he says because he has dominion over me. When I disobey what he says, I am like the second man in the above parable. I am building my house (life) on something that is not stable. I believe that my house will survive any storms that come. However, when storms (circumstances and situations) come, my house (life) will be swept away. I did not take the time to build my house (life) on a proper foundation. I cared more about what I (and others) could see on the outside instead of what I couldn’t see under the surface.

The foundation is the most important part of any structure. If the foundation is off, everything else will be off. When your foundation is on Him you will be able to withstand the storm when it comes. You will not be swept away and destroyed. You will go through the storm and have a great testimony afterwards. Always remember, you can’t have a testimony without facing a test!

What happens if you haven’t been following what Jesus has said? If you have listened to His Words but not applied it to your life? You must repent! You must turn to Jesus and start to follow his commands. Ask the Lord to forgive you for your sin and decide to change your actions! Many times it is useful to find an accountability partner to help you keep your word. This person should be mature in the things of God and want to help you mature in the things of God. “We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord.” – Romans 15:2. Ask the Lord for help if you are feeling overwhelmed, He is always there! “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” – 1 Peter 5:7.
