Study the Word

In Devotional, News by Howard Fox

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. – 2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV

If I want to mature in the things of God, I need to read and study the Bible. Not only do I need to read the Bible, but I must learn to properly apply the scriptures to my life. In the above verse, Paul told Timothy to study the Word to properly understand what the scriptures are teaching.

In Luke 4:1-13, Satan tempted Jesus three times, and each time Jesus overcame the temptation by stating the Word of God. However, the third time Jesus was tempted, Satan used the Word of God against Jesus. Satan quoted two verses of Psalm 91, but was applying it out of context. Satan was twisting the scriptures to fit his agenda – to try and destroy Jesus. If Jesus had not been able to “rightly divide the Word of Truth” he could have accepted what Satan said and jumped from the temple.

How many times have we accepted the lies of Satan as Truth? If Jesus was tempted by Satan in this way, Satan will twist the Word of God and use it against also! I do not have to fear this because God has said that He will not let us be tempted beyond our ability to overcome. “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13

But it is my responsibility to study the Word of God. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. – Luke 6:45 NKJV I have to put the Word of God inside of me so the Word will come out when I am in a moment of temptation!
